When pondering why the police need armored tanks shifts from the Wookiee suiters to the guys that run car blogs, it’s a sign people are paying attention and worried.

Wookie Suiters Lead The Way! See, they TOLD us all, but did anyone listen? Nooooo…. Actually, I remember when my hometown got a Surplus Halftrack from the Federales for “Riot Control” in the 1960’s. Actually had to break it out once during the 1968 riots after MLK was murdered. They used it as a road block at the town line, which just happened to be where “Those People” were Segregated into “Their Neighborhood”. Since the Local Police at that time where made up of “Bubbas”, the rioters decided that it was not a good idea to cross the Town Line. Plus, somehow the Cops were able to get a couple of 1919 Browning Machine Guns mounted on the Track. Of course, this took place in the Liberal North, where No Prejudice was ever shown.
Morale? Tacticool Money Wasting beats walking the beat anytime! Col. Cooper warned us many times years ago about the Militarization of the Police Forces….

Although rare, there are definite needs for police agencies to have access to armored vehicles. Take last week’s murder of two St. Petersburg police officers:
http://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/article1147322.ece
Officers are looking for a wanted fugitive who ambushed them from the attic of a house. While two officers are laying inside bleeding, other officers have no way of getting into the home to rescue them. An attempt was made using SWAT-type shields, resulting in the shooting (and death) of another police officer.
Not until an armored car was brought to the scene were they able to rescue the one remaining officer inside, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.
It is very easy to rail against the militarization of police departments, and to a certain extent, I agree. But just because something “looks scary” doesn’t mean it is. Keep in mind that is how they banned “assault weapons” in the 90’s.

That’s too much, man, it’s like an arms race. Gonna have to pick up some RPGs at the next gunshow. Isn’t that where the mexicans are getting them?

I read Jalopnik fairly often, and saw this headline this week. I didnt read it, As jalopnik usualy has a heavy left slant… I expected them to be overjoyed that the Police had such a vehicle.
