“(And people wonder why it’s so hard for husbands to get their wives to the range. Sheesh.)”
If you plan to start her off with a “manly” compact .45 when you finally get her to the range…I don’t think the adjective will be the cause of her not going back.
HL, the adjective alone is enough to turn many women off of going to the range. Because that makes it a “Guy” thing.
No argument that guys regularly hand over way too much gun off the bat, but getting women to the range to begin with is just as big of a problem if not bigger. Not to mention too much gun is often handed to both men and women.
Using adjectives like that just helps create more Markley’s law incidents, push off new members to the sport, and further drive a wedge socially.
Here you’re stepping up and imply Breda is wrong by saying people are handing a manly .45 over. Well I have two friends who would say fuck off because neither one of them carry a “manly” .45, they carry their own 45. One wore her 45 in her wedding dress. So what makes the .45 “Manly”? Manly has nothing to do with it, training and knowing how to properly handle recoil has everything to do with it. Again, you use the adjective to imply that something is exclusive to men when it isn’t.
Regarding the “manly” 1911, I’m still not sure where to put my testicles on the gun……
In point of fact, there’s no such thing as man-guns or woman-guns, there’s just guns and shooters. Men and women need the same damned things from their firearms, boobs, wangers, X and Y chromosomes have NOTHING to do with it.
Last Labor Day, I seem to recall a certain Breda taking a certain Newbius’ German Drilling and firing some Euro Round that is the Ballistic Equivalent of a .375 H+H. Other Ladies that were present did the same. Of course, there were also damn near every thing from .25 ACP through .44 Magnums in Handguns, and Long Guns ran from .22LR through the Drilling in all shapes, sizes and systems. Plus some 12 Gauges.
None of us present EVER told the Ladies that “No, you can’t shoot this Firearm, because it’s a Man’s Gun.”
However, my Buddy the Cop handed his Glock SubCompact in 9mm with the 33 round Mag he has over to Breda, just for Shits and Grins.
Let’s just say that I’m sure she still smiles over that event. At least she was grinning the whole time she was emptying the Magazine in one Fell Swoop.
Moral of the Story: Firearms are Gender Neutral. Just ask all those Soviet Female Snipers with their “Manly” Moisen-Nagants during WW2.

Is it so wrong to use the term “manly” in a positive sense?
January 24th, 2012 at 11:05 am
It’s wrong when GunsAmerica uses it.

Tam? Shelly? Gail? I would love to read your responses!

“Is it so wrong to use the term “manly” in a positive sense?”
Not when it refers to something that’s exclusively male. Guns are not one of those things.

Way to miss the entire point. Congratulations.

I didn’t miss the point. And I didn’t insult anyone, so need to get all wound up.

no need*

There is quite a bit of incompetence there. No doubt of it.

I think the proper adjective here is “tone deaf”.

Thank you for the civil response, BB.
My thought is that calling it “manly” isn’t anymore a slander against women than calling it “large” is a slander against “small”.
Perhaps both the reporter and I are tone deaf. I don’t see the absence of “Manliness” as “Womanliness”, but rather “un-manliness”.
Maybe he should have called it “a robust gun”, but then the 9mm fans would have cried foul.

Pink.

I honestly didn’t know “manly” = “man only”.

I think the moral of the story is GunsAmerica sucks.
January 24th, 2012 at 7:59 pm
Everyone knows the Glock 21 is really the manly .45…
(Please don’t hurt me.)
Les- I on the other hand wanted nothing to do with that German Drilling.
January 25th, 2012 at 10:04 am
I loved shooting that Drilling. I’d like to buy a box of ammo for it so we can spend some quality time together, Newbius permitting.
And guys, thanks for reiterating my original point so well. Apparently certain commenters need things translated out of womanese.
