I’m beginning to think that the most overlooked and maybe the most important aspect of stopping power is psychological. Some attackers will run at the sight of a gun, call it the zero shot stop, and other will keep fighting until they bleed out. Absent a CNS hit no theory of stopping power is totally satisfactory so what we might be looking at is just the determination of the attacker.
From there I guess you could argue that a .45 causes more damage and may cause an attacker to give up sooner or that a high capacity 9mm gives you more opportunities to cause damage in rapid succession raising the chances of your attacker throwing in the towel or that .40 S&W is the perfect balance between the two, etc.
Robb… the argument is they are all suck about the same so carry the one that provides the most opportunity for training, the most rounds, in the most manageable package.
Steve… I actually almost included a bit about the psychological aspect and validating the argument for carrying a PMR30, but I was getting long already and thought I could save it for later.
A Critic… Two points. 1) I believe most revolver calibers are better suited for rifles… like those to and the .357. 2) You need to have a balance and while those may stop a charging bull with a single round, if you miss you’re going to get trampled.
The other Jack- My gun sucks MORE… 18 or 34 times.
A Critic- you wanna fire a .500 indoors without hearing protection?
Actually I have read the argument that (at close range) .44 Magnum and more powerful calibers are wasting energy on a human target. Also follow up shots would be slower, and of course ammo capacity is limited. (You can make the case for a pocket sniper at long range.)
I have had a 357 Magnum stuck in my face in anger (motel robbery). The police recovered the gun(Blackhawk) at the suicide scene a half hour later and showed it to me. Up to that point, I would have sworn it was some kind 20mm pistol.
The hole in the end of the barrel looked VERY Large, and in that “oh shit” moment, I thought, “that is huge…I may not survive a shot from that.”
I would assume that under similar circumstances, having a look at a 44 mag, 45 ACP, or something similar would have appeared to me to be a bofors.
If your attacker is not juiced up on something, and you get the draw on him, the bigger that hole looks to him the better.
Having said that, I carry about everything except a 40. I am not professiono enuff.
Well duh. Of course all pistol calibers suck. Pistols have always been last ditch you are out of rifle ammo and you have broken your rifle and bayonet on the enemies skull type situation. The ironic thing is gun banners target assault weapons as being for war but pistols are the real weapons of war… They were designed for the last ditch battle from the very beginning.
A Critic: Well.. I have a nasty feeling that those beasts in their sheer gross excess might look like toys to your average mugger; that’s assuming you manage to carry one daily and then draw it when faced by a threat. It’d be a bit sad if using one ended up reducing your chance of a armed self-defence encounter where the attacker ran away from 98% to 95%.
On the other hand, you would get to be the first to kill a man with “the most powerful handgun in the world”.
Old Rossi 720. Five shot .44 caliber snubbie. Because of the combination of the large caliber combined with the small revolver, the holes look enormous! Great intimidation value.

All calibers suck? Fine. But don’t then go saying that your caliber is THE caliber to carry for SD. Kinda kills the point.

If I didn’t have to carry a .40 at work, I wouldn’t have one at all. I carry a .45 or 9 for CCW.

Robb, I suppose the argument will go “Mine sucks the least!”

What about the .460 and .500 Magnums? Are they also insufficiently powered from a handgun to be qualified for self defense?

Everyone knows that .357 SIG is the best pistol caliber.

Caliber or cartridge?
March 16th, 2012 at 1:13 pm
Well. I hear a double barrel shotgun is pretty powerful. It’s not as portable as a double barrel .45 calibre handgun tho’.Shame.

Best of both worlds is a compact .45 with 12+1. I have 14rd mags for followup. It hides just as well as a 1911.

I’m waiting for Taurus to offer the Supreme Court Judge revolver: chambers 12 gauge 3/12 shells or 0.50 BMG.

Can’t we all just get a long gun?;)
