Odd claim
A NY firearms instructor says Most civilians don’t carry hollow-points because they are more expensive. Nearly everyone I know who carries does carry some sort of hollow point round because they’re more effective. I presume the reason he’d say this is because he means criminals who are unlawfully carrying.

Read the comments below-Cooper clarifies and it’s precisely what Unc thought.

“I do not see my comment – again – be wary when speaking with those who are ignorant about weapons systems, especially, reporters. I opined to the reporter that Badguys have little interest in, or ability to use less penetrating and more effective “controlled expansion rounds “- They use “Bargin Basement” ammunition. Armed civilians and law enforcement do use what she calls hollow point bullets- I have no knowledge of a handgun round being called a “cop killer” bullet. This is a fantasy from over a decade past, being reinvented. Controlled expansion rounds are less likely to penetrate objects, including bullet resistent vests. I will be more careful, should I get an inquiry from a reporter.

“I presume the reason he’d say this is because he means criminals who are unlawfully carrying.”
It is just the mentality that a civilian carrying a gun IS a criminal.

Sigh! Does one have to have the Fudd Gene to be a NY State Firearms Instructor?

Sound like they have twisted his words against him. He should have known better speaking to a media matters outlet though.

So if an LEO is carrying a 40S&W with Golden Sabre ammo, is he/she planning to kill other cops?
I guess the writer didn’t have to take Logic 101 for their major at Douchebag State.

Contrary to popular belief criminals do not generally use the cheapest ammo… Why should they when they probably stole the gun?

I didn’t think people still called them “cop-killer” bullets. Mostly for the reason Gerry mentions above.
The most “hard-core” firearms class I ever took referred to “shooting ammo” (FMJ) and “killing ammo” (HP). There were several LEOs and Military students there. Don’t remember any of them objecting to the HPs.

Some cheap guns can’t handle hollow point ammo but do fine with ball.

In Texas, I’d say the JHP is the most commoly carried defense round. At least that’s my impression from conversations in CHL classes since 2001. No one really discussed in my initial 1996 CHL class.

That putz is a civilian also. I correct any LEO I hear use the term civilian to reference citizens. We are only considered civilian by the military. To everybody else I am a citizen. CITIZEN you NY “firearms instructor (tool)” CITIZEN!

most criminals i ever encountered that had guns on them used whatever they could get as far as ammo goes. they really don’t care. to them bullets are bulets. yeah, a few of them are more savy and want some kind is of hollow point, but most of them care not so long as they can shoot Mookie cuz he smoked all their dope last night. i’ve even seen bad guy guns that jammed because they didn’t get the *caliber* right, much less the bullet configuration. 9mm short in a 9mm Luger and .40 in a 9mm are not uncommon.

Well the NY instructor may be right.
Consider all the hoodies and hommies and gangbangers that carry in NY! Bet alot of them don’t carry hollowpoints.

Heh!
I gotta remember that one!

So I wonder what DHS is going to do with 450 million “cop killers”?
