Actually, some good advice. Also, a small wrecking bar and a sturdy screwdriver are always handy things to have near at hand in the car, if you can’t have something more potent.

Those are “burglary tools” in some states.
No kidding.

Never, ever attack an artisan in his or her workshop. There are simply too many potential weapons, and the artisan knows how to use them.
All we have to do is convince teachers to make their classes — at least partway — into shops. The wrench used to teach history of technology is a good example.

Hammer handle that you keep forgetting to take out of the car?

Well, the trick is to think outside the box. It’s not chisels, it is sharp edges. It isn’t cooking oil, it is a slippery substance. It takes a bit of mental conditioning to train yourself to MacGyver in a high stress situation.
Careful having wrecking bars and screwdrivers tucked near at hand, that can be construed as going armed. Best keep them somewhere logical for common use.
A length of PVC pipe is useful. It can be rigged as a holder for something but be readily at hand. It is arguably not a deadly weapon, but it can be used discouragingly.
I could see a section filled with cooking oil tucked away for the emergency. Deploy the oil, then keep the pipe for further discouragement while they’re slipping around. Keep it all tucked in a bucket of kitty litter to deploy for the bug out.

Or carry a gun. No MacGyver-ing..no swinging sword fight…just pull the trigger until the threat is down and out of the fight.

@mariner: at least in OR, the Burglar’s Tools law is an enhancement to the Burglary statute and can’t be charged by itself.

Cooking oil? Sounds like a suggestion that a commie lib d-bag would make. How about a .45 ACP?

I think the point of the post is that weapons are every where and that you just need to look to find them. Plus if you think about is beforehand and prepare, when the time comes you will be able to react. Alternately there are only tools and your brain is the true weapon.

Chas,
I am neither a commie, a liberal, nor a douche bag. I carry a Colt Combat Commander in .45 acp and have done so for slightly over 30,000 hours. Some folks in society (the world over) are not so fortunate.

AK — “Carry a gun” is great advice. . . except when the law or school policy prohibits you as a teacher from HAVING a gun. Also, in other cases where you simply may not be permitted to be armed.
