I live near Austin, Texas.
In years past, people legally carrying guns in their cars were arrested in Houston and elsewhere, under the direction of the local DA, and had to lawyer up and go to court to present as an affirmative defense that they were “traveling,” which made the gun in the car legal. So Texas passed a law specifying that guns in cars were legal, period.
Same thing with open carry. The open carry law here in Texas was implemented in part because overzealous anti-gun district attorneys were causing the arrest and prosecution of people for innocent, momentary exposure of legally carried, concealed handguns. Park at the Post Office and remove your handgun to leave it in the car while you mail a package – potential arrest. Have your jacket flap up in the wind – potential arrest. So now open carry by CHL people is legal. Take that, anti-rights haters!
I like this technique of punching back twice as hard, as directed by our great president, when attacked in such malicious ways by anti-gun government officials.

Eh, the hysteria will die down shortly. H-E-B and all the restaurants making noise will calm down and life will become normal. I suspect it will start to look like Arizona in a year or two where open carry is not unusual in rural areas and small towns, but is rare in the big cities.
In the mean time, Kroger has been excellent on the subject of carry all together, if my multiple outings to Fry’s (their brand in Arizona, unrelated to the big electronics and appliance stores) is any indication.
