Right Fred, and Paul said, “he wanted the government to leave us the hell alone!” As a classical liberal SCOTUS Justice once said,
“The makers of our constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness… They sought to protect Americans in their beliefs, their thoughts, their emotions and their sensations. They conferred, as against the government, the right to be let alone – the most comprehensive of the rights and the right most valued by civilized men.” –Louis D. Brandeis
In addition to Republicans, that makes many so-called “liberals” uncomfortable because they are NOT really liberal in the classical sense and are very selective in what they allow.
He is self-deprecating but he gets too abrasive, too strident when it comes to ideology and actual policy issues. Unfortunately, that does not win over a lot of people these days. I wish he would be more affable when discussing these things. He is when they are playing around the edges; “I thought you agreed to not ask me about pot.” But then he comes off too serious when discussing no fly zones and world war III. There is a time and place to be serious about that, but Colbert is not it.
He didn’t really make much of a case, though it was a very short segment.
“…that makes many so-called “liberals” uncomfortable because they are NOT really liberal in the classical sense and are very selective in what they allow.”
They’re not liberal at all. They’re coercive, which as you might recognize is the opposite of liberal. Coercive. That’s the word I’m using from now on. It’s the right word. There’s no point in participating in a lie any longer, once you’ve seen the truth.
Too bad he hasn’t gained more traction in his run so far.
I would LOVE to vote for an elected official that has as one of his main tenets to Leave People Alone!
KM, yes, like this classically liberal SCOTUS justice said,
“The makers of our Constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness. … They conferred against the government, THE RIGHT TO BE LET ALONE—the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men.” –Lois D. Brandeis, Olmstead vs. U.S., 1928

He sums up the situation rather succinctly. “they [dems/repubs] won’t leave you alone no matter what.”

I like him smart, funny, self-deprecating. But as presidents go, he’s a great congressman.

Lyle, “coercive” is a good word for them. I didn’t use my usual term for today’s so called liberals which is authoritarian.

Wait a minute, guys. I call myself a classical liberal sometimes and I believe people should be free to do anything I want to do.

Coercive is also a highly appropriate word that applies to conservatives.

Publius true, except for a few conservatives who want to CONSERVE ALL of the Bill of Rights.
