Key word being “act”.
They have a job to do, and they’ll do it if it bankrupts them.
Sure; some of them are probably genuine, blithering idiots, but in that case they are blithering idiots hired specifically for their particular form of blithering idiocy, and so it is nonetheless a strategy serving a purpose. It works the same either way, but the genuine idiot (or emotional basket case) is most likely to follow orders and play along without getting ideas of his own.
