Classic Rock, Man!
Ok, I know I’m really hitting the blog equivalent of rock-bottom by linking to SomethingAwful, but it struck me that this review of Classic Rock bands left out a terribly important act: Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Somebody explain to me how I can be listening to the local Classic Rock station, hear “Freebird,” scream in pain, and then switch to the Classic Rock station in a town 80 miles away, only to find out they’re playing “Sweet Home Alabama.” How do they do that?

SayUncle, meet Clear Channel. Clear Channel, meet SayUncle.
(Personally, I’d go with the Sweet Home Alabama generic radio outlet. Clearly their programming-bots were programmed with better taste. But find one that plays “Call Me the Breeze” and you’ll have the winner bot.)

Well, I know one station is Clear Channel, but I don’t think the other one is. Maybe there’s some kind of conspiracy or something.

Oops, sorry, I didn’t notice that was you that posted that. That’s twice today I didn’t pay attention to a byline.
At any rate, they all suck. It’s the corporate media/advertising Borg.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is responsible for my marriage!

Years ago, I picked up the habit of calling out “Free Bird!” at any live performance, no matter what the musical style. Jazz band? “Free Bird!” Goths? “Free bird!” Hip-hop? “Free bird!” One of my best friends, George, usually follows up that call with “Whippin’ Post!”
I used to call out “Sabbath!” but then one day, the bassist from an R&B band actually played and sang the first few lines of War Pigs — and did it well.

heh. I was playing in this top 40/r&b band a few years back. We haed a gig on the top floor of some hotel in N. Myrtle Beach, S.C. It was a jazz room more or less so the first set we did nothing but light jazz & opened it up a little (but not much) in the following sets.
So one night we’re in the middle of the first (light jazz) set & this older biker looking dude walks up & asks us if we know Freebird. The keyboard player (who sung & ran the band) smiles & says “look at the band – I’m sorry we don’t play it”. The old guy reaches in his pocket, lays $100 on the keyboard & says “how ’bout now?” So the keyboard player promptly turns around, says “alright y’all – Freebird in G – Pub, you’re white: call out the (chord) changes”.
Truthfully I’m kind of tired of the Skynyrd you hear all the time on the clasic rock staions. Hell, I was a bit burnt out on it when they were “album oriented rock” stations. Sklynyrd has a lot of well written & well performed songs that never get any airplay at all.
“I need you”, “Mississippi kid”, “Made in the Shade”, “Am I losin?”, “Things goin’ on”, “4 walls of Raiford”, & “One in the sun” are just a few. If you have some old Skynyrd albums laying around look those tracks up & give them a listen. Better yet, call the classic rock stations & demand they add them to the rotation for a while to relieve “freebird burnout” (which is a shame cause Freebird is a well written & performed song for the genre).

What about their anti-gun anthem?
