Paul “Reasoned Discourse” Helmke’s Latest
Paul Helmke is quoting Sarah Brady:
The fact is that this debate isn’t about guns at all. It’s about how we as a society relate to guns. It’s about how we buy them, sell them, store them, and use them. When we talk about gun control, what we’re really talking about are ways to encourage people to behave differently around guns. A gun may be just a tool, but it’s a tool whose misuse can have profound and permanent consequences.
When we talk about gun control, we’re talking about ways to make criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens. That’s what it does. I don’t disagree with Mrs. Brady’s characterization of gun control about being how we relate to guns, but I certainly disagree with the Brady solution, which is more laws, and more regulations. The way to encourage responsible gun use is through education and outreach to gun owners, something that the NRA has done far more of than The Brady Campaign ever has.

So advocating for all sorts of bans isn’t debating about guns? Huh?

I was thinking he was due for something…I went to the Why We’ll Win site Paul mentions.

Interesting, but I object to the portrayal of the gun issue as right vs. left. It’s freedom vs. authortarianism.

He’s lying. They don’t give a flip about any of those laws except as incremental steps toward confiscation.

Lies? From Paul Hemke, the lie pusher? Does he ever tell the truth?

When we talk about power tools, what we’re really talking about are ways to encourage people to behave differently around power tools. A power tool may be just another tool, but it’s a tool whose misuse can have profound and permanent consequences.
When we talk about matches, what we’re really talking about are ways to encourage people to behave differently around matches. A match or a Zippo lighter may be just a tool, but it’s a tool whose misuse can have profound and permanent consequences.
When we talk about automobiles, what we’re really talking about are ways to encourage people to behave differently around automobiles. An automobile may be just a tool, but it’s a tool whose misuse can have profound and permanent consequences.
Ban everything. Only then can we be guaranteed of never, ever dying or getting hurt or sick or even feeling uncomfortable in any way, ever, ever.
How about this one, which you might have seen come out of the KKK 40 years ago:
When we talk about minorities, what we’re really talking about are ways to encourage people to behave differently around minorities. A minority may be just a person, but he’s a person whose misbehavior can have profound and permanent consequences.
Or, from 1930s Germany:
When we talk about Jews…
Same tactics, different target group. Socialists (control freaks, sociopaths, et al) never go away; they just put on a new disguise.

Of course, if we controlled criminals, we wouldn’t need to control guns…
