I am about to engage in a site re-design. I’m thinking two columns instead of three. Dunno about the color scheme yet. Any suggestions or ideas?

Hey, I use Orange and White. 🙂
Seriously, from a designer’s perspective, use very few images, and make it CSS2 and HTML compliant. That way, I can upload it to my PDA, and read it, instead of having to log onto the Net at the office.
Either way, it’s content that matters!

I’m thinking fuschia, ecru, mauve, chartreuse, melon, and taupe. If you did it right, it would look fabulous.
Anything short of perfection, though, and it’s seizure city for all of your readers.

I’ve been thinking about these issues as I’ve been working on my own site (which is still a work in process). I’m not much of a color coordinator, but as far as the layout goes, I think two column designs often appear less cluttered and thus make it easier for the reader to focus on the posts–the site’s main content. It’s good to have some open space.
Dave raises a good point about being CSS and HTML compliant. The other thing to keep in mind when using CSS is that the page may appear different depending on what browser you’re using. I’ve been working on my site using Mozilla, and noticed that it doesn’t look quite as good in Internet Explorer.
Go on a random blog surfing safari and examine the various styles. You might find some good ideas.

I agree that a two-column design appears less cluttered, but doggone it, I use both of my side columns. So I’m sticking with three columns even though the people at 800×600 pay for it because it squeezes the middle column.
Such a conundrum.
The use of graphics is also a difficult question. I think they add to the post and in this day of broadband it isn’t a problem for the vast majority of users. Except, of course, for wireless users.
One idea I’ve been toying with is using a second site for PDA/low bandwidth users, but that doesn’t solve the graphics problem.

Attention PDA and WAP Users
Say Uncle got me to thinking about website design and balancing content presentation with the needs of low-bandwidth users. So with a little help from an old post on Symbian Diaries I have created a wml index template. But I don’t have a wml-enabled de…
