Smith has evidently decided that it is preferable that the country view him as a liar than stand by his earlier statements, which not only had much more of the ring of truth about them do than his current cowardly backscrabblings. Backscrabblings which, in any case, do little to remove the criminal impression he earlier gave of the House Republican Leadership.
