Just Wondering

Does this little Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance apply to the Internet? In October 2004, can I no longer blog things that are critical of politicians?

I would say that the ruling doesn’t apply to you at all. You’re not buying ad time on someone else’s media outlet. You’re exercising your first amendment right to expression in your own personal forum, and nothing in the law prevents you from doing so.

Now if you wanted to buy a 30-second spot on CNN in October 2004, about how Bush and Dean/Dem are both evil, and you should vote Harry Brown, you would NOT be allowed to do that.

Also, and here’s where my knowledge is a bit shakier, I believe that Dean/Dem and Bush can buy ad time during that 60 day window. The third party special interest attack groups (MoveOn, Right to Life, etc.) cannot.

I heard a Republican lawyer on NPR say (I haven’t double checked this so consider the source) that the interest group advertising restrictions only apply to T.V. and radio–not the Internet.

Bullshit! NPR is a liberal propaganda machine! They would never feature a Republican prominently, unless it is to undermine him!
