The South Shall Rise Again
Apparently, the south comprises the largest percentage of US population:
The South now accounts for 36 percent of the nation’s total population, the numbers show, with the West comprising 23 percent, the Midwest 22 percent and the Northeast 19 percent.
I actually find that surprising. I thought it would be the north east.

I’m curious to know what they’re considering “the south.” If they’re including Florida and/or Texas, I can believe that, but neither of those states is really part of “the south,” as the term is commonly understood.

Right. It probably also includes Maryland and West Viriginia, which are far cries from Alabama and Mississippi. Heck, East Tennessee isn’t all that “southern,” either.

Well I could have told you that.
Hell, half the world’s population was at Wal-Mart last night, so it’s no surprise that nearly a hundred million Americans live within a day’s drive of my house.

Brian A.:
According to the historians at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, East Tennessee was home to some of the bloodiest fighting in the civil war, because a strong pro-Union sentiment was pervasive there. So I’d agree, it isn’t all that southern in a lot of places.

There was a recent piece on the local NPR affiliate about knoxville in the civil war. Knoxville was truly divided down the middle with pro union and pro confederacy rallies scheduled at the same time.

I heard part of the NPR piece–wish I had heard the whole thing. It was interesting how East Tennessee largely divided along class lines (upper class more pro-southern, lower class more pro-union). Also Lincoln supposedly had a special interest in East Tennessee, which he viewed as a base for reconstruction.

This is not good for Democrats who have losing the Southern vote for the last four decades. Democrats that write off the South are idiots and it appears there are a lot of idiots. Howard Dean understands that and that is why he made that comment about him pursuing the vote of guys with Rebel flag bumpers stickers on their pickup trucks. Whoever wrote that book The Emerging Democratic Majority, I forget the authors and I’m not sure of the title, must not have been paying attention to the South. Democrats will be toast for a generation if Republicans don’t help us out with a few impeachable scandals and if Democrats don’t wake up and pay attention to American between the East and West Coasts.
