Boy do I hate state lotteries. Far too much of the money goes to the state and far too little for the prizes. My brother calls them the Stupid Tax, cause the stupider you are the more you pay.

Yeah, but it’s a tax that people line up to pay, and pay enthusiastically. There aren’t many taxes like that.
I never thought about this before, but isn’t it the Tax on People Who Can’t Do Math basically a sin tax? In exchange for doing something that some people disapprove of, one pays a tax, just like cigarettes and alcohol. In exchange for your tax contributions, the finger-waggers look the other way and let people do something they don’t approve of.
