How Government Works
Kim du Toit offers a great example of how government can mess up a good system.

Because everyone knows that rules are bad, and complicated rules are even worse. Repeal all rules!

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying, being the anarchist that I am.

What, then, are you saying? That it’s too much to ask that you separate your trash? Today, trash/paper/plastic, tomorrow they take our first born children?
This idiot is too daft to separate his trash, and you cite that as a “great example” of how government ruins stuff — presumably, according to du Twit, because they’ve imposed semi-complex rules. The horror!
Next thing you know, they’re going to require me to drive between the lines and signal my turns, and before you know it, I’m locked up in an internment camp!

Actually, I am referring to the point that the structure of the rules is driving people away from recycling, which is how government works.
February 5th, 2004 at 12:26 pm
And du twit? You can do better than that.
February 5th, 2004 at 12:31 pm
And you use one guy as your evidence of this? Something tells me that he wouldn’t recycle no matter HOW convenient they made it for him.
You’ll need a lot better data the du Toit to convince me that these requirements are driving people away from curbside recycling programs in droves. The rules aren’t dissimilar here, and virtually everyone in my neighborhood participates. That, too, is anecdotal, I’ll admit; but on neighborhood still trumps one idiot.
And trust me, I’m sure there are a lot more idiots like him, but I’m reasonably confident that they’re the exception, not the rule, and that the structure of the rules isn’t what prevents most of them from participating.

Wow! One man’s personal observation (though anectdotal) is entirely discredited? Please. His opinion on the issue is as valid as anyone who thinks the recycling service is great.
I wish my city had recycling pickup. But no only trash. we make the weekend trek to recycle.

Du Twit: I know, I know, I just couldn’t resist. I fell into the Drudge trap. 😉

It’s not his opinion that I discredit. It’s the conclusion you draw from that opinion that I find baseless. It would be like me pointing to somebody who shot another person with their own legally owned and registered firearm, and said “see, legalizing guns ruins everything.”
