It’s called hog catching not hog watching
The Humane Society is trying to shut down a bull dog show because the show involves hog catching:
Apparently, a bulldog chases a wild boar inside a large, enclosed pen until the pig is caught and pinned by the neck or ear in the fastest time.
Organizers, though, say it’s a legitimate training exercise for hunting dogs, and bill it as an action-packed weekend filled with shows and contests for bulldog enthusiasts.
“I think it’s pathetic … and has no place in a civilized society,” said Kim Noetzel with the Arizona Humane Society.
She calls the event a “blood sport” and say it may be against the law.
I’ve never taken Politically Incorrect Dog hog catching. I have, however, seen it. Trust me, the hog is not enjoying the experience. Many people take dogs on wild boar hunts and the sport is legal in most places.
Update: Jane asks (See trackback below) how this is different from a rodeo? I don’t think it is.

Trust me when I say this…Those hog’s love every bit of catch trials! 7 out of 10 times the hog is gonna cut the hell out of the dog and probably toss it 15 feet up a tree! Hogs are meaner that heck, and they love a good fight.Which confuses the catch dog because it’s instincts are to catch and hold(hense:Bulldog)on to a cow/bull. But boars are rampid and the most logical way to control the population is to hunt with working American Bulldogs.I don’t believe in sending my bulldog’s after a little piggies. We deal with big Russian Sows and Boars in the wilds of the southern mid-west and southeast. The only reason I have ever did catch trials is to title my studs and bi%%hes to increase value. Also it is the only way for them to get practice although a good hog dog will catch and hold the very first time it lays eyes on one out of pure insticts. If you live in a hog wild area than you can agree!!!

I agree with mark the hogs love a good fight. They charge humans in the wild and in the trials. All hog hunters with pride try to put there dogs up against the toughest of hogs this means that the dogs are trying to beat an animal 5 or 6 times there size that has every chance to win the fight. As far as it being humane to catch them in a pen i think(know) there is nothing wrong with it for the reason that these pigs are never killed but dogs are killed about 20% of the time.

i see nothing wrong with hog catching.i also agree that the hogs enjoy it,i’ve seen hogs charge the dogs befor the dogs even move.the worst thing i’ve ever seen happen to a hog is it gettin it’s ear cut off and the hog is fine and still charges everything.i love hog catching and support it all the way!

people dont have a clue to what really goes on at these events. If they would just go and check out what an organized event is like they would see that it is a family event where the dogs grab the hogs by the ear most of the time and the ownerIMMEDIATELY gets the dog off of the hog trying to see who gets the fastest catch.IT IS LEGAL TO WALK IN THE WOODS AND BLOW A HOGS HEAD OFF BUT YOU BETTER NOT LET YOUR DOG BITE HIS EAR.The kids love to go to these events and catch the hogs also.It is a place where a family can spend quality time together and enjoy the rights we have as americans.Lets worry about more importana things pleas, like the cost of living, gas prices ,drugs, poverty .war etc.I SUPPORT HOG CATCHES 110%…….

I don’t think that they should be outlawed it gives us teenagers things to do on saturday night and it helps us stay out of trouble. Where I live some of the cops go to them. The ones that I go to they don’t allow drugs to be there and stuff. They don’t allow anyone to fight someone else. If you get caught with anything you can’t come back for couple of weekends or to a month.

I too support hog catching. Here in Louisiana the law makers are trying to ban it. They also wan’t to ban cock fighting. I think it sucks.Hog catching doesn’t affect them one bit in their life. If you don’t like it don’t watch it.

Cruelty or Sport?
Perhaps as a resident of the gopher-hunting contest province, I’m a tad desentisized to claims of animal cruelty. But how is this any different than rodeo events?…
