What the ….?
George Bush wants line-item veto power. What on Earth for? It’s not like he vetoes anything.

I’d like to have “line item veto power” at the ballot box – “I voted for X based on these party planks and NOT these”. Maybe this way the candidate could get an idea of what we, the electorate care about.

I though either Bush Sr or Clinton got line-item veto enacted, but the courts decided it was unconstitutional.

Les is right — a Republican congress gave Clinton the line item veto and he selectively axed 2 billion dollars worth of port. Then SCOTUS ruined it.

About a month back, FoxNews ran a piece that said GWB does have a decent record at getting what he wants by threatening a veto and getting Congress to back down.

I don’t understand why line-item veto is unconstitutional, nor why Bush AND Congress wouldn’t want it. It’s the best way to remove all the crap and pork from bills.

It’s unconstitutional because it’s inconsistent with the process specified in the Constitution for passing and/or vetoing bills. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a great idea, but it needs to be done by constitutional amendment, not by statute.
