Easy answer: They’re not really the party of states’ rights. They only take up that mantle when it’s convenient for them.
This is far from the only example. Medical marijuana in California, euthanasia in Oregon, etc.

There’s also an easier, less cynical answer: gay rights activists have overplayed their hands, and this is blowback.

of course, XRLQ is right. It has nothing to do with pandering to the religious right. It’s just about activist judges and all that other nonsense.
