Weekly Gun Links

Les has his weekly gun links up. For what it’s worth, I have heard nothing but good things about Mosin-Nagant rifles. However, I have no idea what they cost. $98 may or may not be a good price.

I do, however, recall the late 80s and early 90s when the SKS (before its import was banned by executive order from Dubya’s daddy) was gaining popularity. A friend had a gun shop. He was buying them for $59 in bulk and selling them for $80. Now, they go for about $220. Hindsight being what it is, I would have bought 20 of them in bulk and locked them away some where.

I keep looking at those Mosin Nagants because of the price. However, I usually come back to my senses when I realize that if I got one, it would most likely end up at the back of my gunsafe next to my Swedish M38 that I haven’t fired in about eight years. It appears to be a great deal at $79 (in my neck of the woods), but is something I don’t need. I have too many other guns I would rather shoot.

That’s my thing, too: I’m not sure how much I’d shoot it. For the price, I’m not too worried about it, though for the same money I could have bought the nice Beaman pellet rifle at the last gun show. I know I’d shoot that a lot.

That is exactly it. It is not the cash itself, as the price is relatively low for the rifle. It is the opportunity cost, or what you would miss out on buying because you spent your money on the Mosin Nagant. The price of the rifle and accessories plus the cost of stocking up on ammunition in a new caliber could buy me a laser rangefinder.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
