But I thought gun purchasing data was destroyed after 24 hours?
A judge in New York has ordered the Justice Department to release data tracing sales of guns used in crime back to the dealers where the guns were purchased. This is the result of a lawsuit by the city that alleges:
. . . gun manufacturers use marketing and distribution practices that allow criminals to get firearms, creating a public nuisance.
Another frivolous lawsuit but, since it’s New York, they’ll probably win.

The theory goes like this:
BATF traces on guns siezed by police will show that some gun dealers sold more traced guns than others.
Gun makers or distributors should have taken note of which dealers sold more traced guns than others, and cut them off.
This despite:
BATF traces do not in itself indicate that there was a crime committed.
Many dealers have more traced guns than others because they are big stores with high volume sales, and have never been found guilty of any wrongdoing.
On this basis, gun stores should be put out of business.
