I’ve been hit hard this week as well. I’ve seen a noted increase. I got a pretty impressive one today with over 250 URLs in it. Bastards.
I would use that sort of plugin but I actually like that comments are open on older entries — there’s quite a bit of discussion ongoing on some very old posts I’ve made..
For now it’s only a minor nuisance, even with mt-blacklist.. If it got much worse, though, I might have to consider that..

I’d be reluctant to use it, because sometimes people do find old posts and make useful comments. Of course, a flood of spam could change my reluctance, but it’s also true that spammers could just as easily target recent posts. Cockroaches and spammers are highly adaptable.
The ideal solution once MT 3.0 comes out might be to require registration to comment on older posts.

Are you, perchance, seeing “referrer spam” as well? I’ve seen a number of really weird referrer links in my logs — stuff like some weird german website and a townhall.com column — that doesn’t have any link to the page being requested from my site. The same URL showing up as the referrer in tons of different pages. It’s driving me nuts.

Matthew, not lately. I got some a while back though.

I get slammed by referral spam nonstop. It’s the bane of my existence. Particularly annoying because there’s nothing you can do about it, really.

In tgirsch’s perfect world, rather than closing comments on posts older than n days, I could close comments on posts that have not been commented on in over n days.
But my CGI Skillz ™ are non-existent, so my only option is to whine and hope somebody else (with the skill and time to implement it) has the same idea, does it, and shares it. 🙂
