More on Moore
A while back, Bubba asked the question:
All the wingnuts slobbering all over themselves to discredit Michael Moore for criticizing their President on a Mission from God seem to have forgotten about Moore criticizing the Big Dog Bill in 1997.
I watched Moore’s movie, “The Big One”, on the Independent Film Channel last night. It revolves around his book tour promoting “Downsize This”. He goes out of his way to slam Clinton for his welfare policies and NAFTA. I don’t recall any wingnuts calling him a despicable liar for that. Go figure.
I guess my question would be, since I don’t recall any, where was the all-out media blitz regarding that movie?
Oh, that liberal media.

NAFTA and “ending welfare as we know it” are actually some of the things I consider positives about Clinton. I’ve never heard of this particular movie; my distate for Moore doesn’t extend to seeking out his lesser known efforts.
But hey, I’ll not pass up a chance to slam him. Damn you Michael Moore!
Satisfied?

Uncle:

Exactly, where was it? You might recall, if you’d been paying attention, that the all-out media blitz concerning this movie was spurred primarily by conservative outrage expressed toward it.
The conservatives didn’t complain about the other movie, and it didn’t get much press. Funny, that. Are you seeing a connection here?

Bullbutter. I’ve seen ads for it all over on TV and on the internet (Yahoo’s freakin’ front page, for example). And let’s not forget the Cannes film festival.
Sorry, tgirsch, but is this more of your unintentional comedy?

Addendum:
As for the earlier film, you also have to consider that in 1997, Moore wasn’t nearly as well known as he was after he won an Oscar. Whether we “wingnuts” like it or not, he’s now a celebrity, and it’s NOT because of us “wingnuts” complaining about his lies.

Unless you’re arguing that bought-and-paid-for advertisements constitute media bias, I don’t see how either of those two things justify Uncle’s complaints about “that liberal media.”
I made the assumption (perhaps incorrect) that he was talking about the news media, and I stand by my statement that Moore’s movies wouldn’t get anywhere near the news coverage they do if not for prominent rightists incessantly complaining about them.

Actually I went and saw it precisely because there were so many who seemed like they desperately didn’t want me to go see it. It’s the first MM film I ever paid to see. Now I realize I’m a very small sample but the fact is this film got a lot of help from the pre release hand wringing.
Quck test who won top prize at last years Cannes film festival? Don’t remember? Neither do I. outside of the film industry Cannes is a bit off the radar for the summer movie crowd so I would say that the reaction of Moore winning the Cannes film festival was the spark that drove the “buzz”.
Moore was a Nader supporter in 2000 so in a way he helped get W elected, and did he get any love for it from the right? Not that I can tell, so really FH 911 is just his penance. [grin]

That should read, the reaction of the right to Moore Winning Cannes…

No, sorry, I was unclear. I was just saying that the only thing resembling a “media blitz,” outside the small corner of the blog world I frequent, is ads and news coverage of the film’s prize.
I stand by my statement that Moore’s movies wouldn’t get anywhere near the news coverage they do if not for prominent rightists incessantly complaining about them.
I guess it’s not provable either way, although I disagree with you (and Mr. DeMent) that the buzz is mainly due to “rightists” complaining.
I might not blame it completely on a media bias—everybody loves a controversy—but I do think that a media bias hasn’t hurt. Oh, sure, I know, there’s no bias; it’s all in the “rightists'” heads. Whatever.

If the ‘prominent rightists’ were so influential, President Dole would be in his second term.
Besides, the appropriate parallel is the Clinton Chronicles, which as everyone knows was embraced by the right and the congressional leadership of the GOP, as well as the national media.
Right?
Mark it down…..you guys will rue the day you snuggled up with Moore.
