CCW In New Jersey

New Jersey doesn’t usually grant carry permits, unless you’re rich, a politico, a policeman, or someone calls in a favor. However, a judge ruled recently that:

A Warren County ship captain may carry a concealed weapon in New Jersey waters and ports, state Superior Court Judge John Pursel ruled Wednesday.

The judge cited the post-Sept. 11 world of terrorist threats and the recent rise in the terrorist alert system as part of the reason for his decision to grant the carrying permit.

Authorities fear the ruling could lead to similar requests from other civilians who would normally face a daunting task in obtaining a New Jersey carrying permit — permits that are tougher to obtain than those in other states, such as Pennsylvania.

Good. However, what about the average citizen?

    I agree.

also from a national defense perspective, having guns in people’s hands who might actually use them is absolutly neccessary.

they should not have had to go to court for this at all

I was issued a limited carry permit in 1975, and held it for two years. The circumstances were thus:

    (1) I was the operations manager for a gold refinery located in Jersey City.
    (2) We had concentric rings of security including 24×7-armed guards supplied by a security company.
    (3) Every Wednesday we convoyed 800-1000 ounces in gold from JC to the Comex in NYC (at a time when gold was 800+ a troy ounce)
    (4) The plant had multiple millions in gold scrap warehoused, some of which was portable (rolls of gold chains, gold charms, etc.)

The security company issued me a “letter of prerequisite need” to get the ball rolling, and it took about 4 months to complete the complicated process. The next to last procedure was explaining to a judge in open court why you needed the permit. Of a dozen (mainly sport-shop owners) in court that day, I was the only one approved. Our Chief of Police issued the permit in a few days. Carry was allowed to, at, and from work.

I used it twice to foil robberies over the next two years…. mainly discovering and holding for the police some indigent dirt-bags rummaging thru our warehouses.

I immediately turned it in when I took a job with GM.

I never realized at the time how rare they were. The process was daunting and I thought that was what kept people from obtaining them. I borrowed a 4” .38 revolver to qualify, but carried my model 36 chiefs special. Concealed carry can become uncomfortable without the proper holsters…just another weight to carry around.

I am in awe of the states I visit where CCW is easy and widespread. But even in Nevada where half my students were packing, I was told surveys have shown that less than 15% of the population carries.

Bye the way, if Jersey ever got easier for CCW, I would get one of the new P2000 HKs. I handled one at our local shop the other day and it was AWESOME. Perfect for CCW.

Wow. That sounds pretty harsh but at least it was do-able.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
