Our fallen (and forgotten) heroes
Fourteen search and rescue dogs who dug through the rubble of the World Trade Center have since died.
Eight of the dogs died from cancer.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine said they don’t believe there is a connection between the deaths and the chemicals the dogs were exposed to.
But the New York Daily News said some dog owners blame the mix of chemicals their dogs were exposed to during the hunt for survivors and remains after the attack on Sept. 11, 2001.
Update: Here’s a tribute to the SAR Dogs of 9/11.

also, i may not be just WTC, it could be any of the rescures the dogs were involved in during their life time.
though, i would not be suprised if it was the WTC.
I wonder if those dogs were just doing things because the were trained, or did they realized their were risking their lives for others?

Having had dogs my entire life, my own sad experience backs up a long discussion I had with the family vet a few years ago when my beloved shepherd/husky took ill.
The leading cause of death for dogs is….drumroll….cancer.
Naturally, the article fails to mention this.
