Excellent!
Bruce tells us about a mother who bought her 16 year-old son a 9MM handgun. The son then takes mom shooting. Most excellent.
For what it’s worth, I’m contemplating the exact build of Junior’s (so what if she’s only 9.5 weeks old?) flattop M4. I’m thinking a build like this one (go to page 3 for a good pic). Any suggestions?

Uncle,
I would suggest trying out an M4gery with a handguard rail system before you buy. A number of my friends have found them to be uncomfortable, and switched back to regular M4 handguards. Of course, it is all personal preference. I would also suggest getting a chrome lined barrel. It will last a lot longer than one that is not chrome lined. It’s not what you would want for a match gun, but a short barreled AR ain’t a match gun! For slings, check out the Specter SOP sling. It is what I have on my M4gery, and I love it! You have mentioned the ARMS #40 BUIS before. That is what I and most of my friends have, and none of us have ever complained about it one bit. It is a very rugged little unit. If you get one, I would suggest going with the #40 over the #40A. My reasoning is that if you want the 40A, all you would need to do is replace the #40 aperture with a standard A2 aperture. If you wanted to switch a #40A to a #40, it would require buying a more expensive milled aperture.
As for Rock River, it is a very solid product. I have one of their uppers, and two of their lowers. But, if you get one, be sure you go through a dealer. RRA has had quite a bit of problems lately with customer service. One of my friends had a large order get so screwed up, it took about five months total to be resolved. It involved wrong product being shipped, some items being shipped multiple times, the order being erroneously cancelled, and incorrect billing. From what he heard from RRA and what I have heard from others, he is not alone with these problems. Save yourself some headaches and go with a dealer that has what you want in stock and ready to ship. Because of the headaches he had to deal with, I ended up without the barrel that I really wanted.

Shouldn’t you be worried about her first .22 bolt gun first?

22 bolt? Nah, she can fire dad’s 10/22.
Robert, my AR has a RRA lower. I like it though the magazine has been jammed a little too far up in it once or twice. I’ll probably get the M4 handguards and slap a weaver on them. I don’t really like how the rails feel. And the rear sight is still up in the air but i’m leaning toward the 40.
Thanks for the advice.

Uncle: Benton Shooting Supply has some nice .22 youth rifles in pink. That’s what I’m planning for our daughter when she’s old enough.

I do suggest a collapsible stock, but not the standard one – it’s too flimsy. Somebody makes a really rigid one (that, of course, I cannot find the link for right now.) And you can get a nice dedicated .22LR upper for it, too.
