Arkansas BSL Alert

North Little Rock is looking at passing breed specific legislation:

Some North Little Rock residents are seeking a ban on pit bulls and the city council will be holding public hearings on the proposal.

North Little Rock updated its vicious dog ordinance last year to prohibit wolf hybrids, but didn’t ban a specific breed.

Pit bulls actually are not a breed, but rather a group of dogs with similar traits and characteristics, according to the Pit Bull Rescue Central Web site.

The proposal would allow pit bull owners who currently have a city dog license or who get one before the ordinance goes into effect, to keep their dogs. But the owners must register the dog by allowing city Animal Services to tattoo it for identification
purposes.

Unlicensed pit bulls or those brought into the city after the law takes effect would be illegal and violators could be criminally prosecuted.

Kudos to KATV for actually researching what a pit bull really is. Shame on them for not presenting the other side of the argument, which is basically that breed specific legislation has many problems and doesn’t work.

and your point is? I don’t think this is a line of argument or dialogue that will go anywhere and you would be better off to stick to gun control. pit bulls and rottweilers are unpredictably vicious and dangerous and they permanently maim and kill a lot of children and adults each year. getting into esoteric arguments about what a pitbull is and what a rottweiler, blah, blah, blah, begs the question, i think. I have some autopsy photos that are burned in my memory of a 4 year old.

    Uh oh, here it comes.

My point is that, just like guns, the problem with aggressive/dangerous pit bulls is the people who own them and encourage their bad behavior and not the dogs themselves. They are fine, loyal dogs when properly socialized. However, bubba and leroy who want the dog to be mean, don’t properly socialize it and encourage aggression give them a bad name.

And pit bulls and rotties are not unpredictable. per the American Temperament Test Society, pits have a better disposition than a golden retriver and score in the 80% (as do rotties, who are slightly below goldens).

And there simply isn’t as widespread amount of attacks by these dogs as people believe. From 1965 to 2001, there were 431 fatalities that break out like this:

25% of all fatal attacks were inflicted by chained dogs
25% resulted from dogs loose in their yard
    23% occurred inside the home
17% resulted from attacks by dogs roaming off their property
10% involved leashed dogs or miscellaneous circumstances

Additionally, the reproductive status of male dogs was a major factor.

And finally my other point is that i can own a dog if i choose to even if the breed offends you, just like i can choose to own a gun.

BSL is a stupid solution. Period. Criminally charging people who allow their dogs to roam in violation of the law is the way to go. And since these bans are often passed to curb dog fighting, people just switch to a different breed. More info on BSL here:

Someone who’d raise a pit bull to be vicious would probably train most other breeds to attack viciously. This may not be possible with all breeds – I find it hard to imagine a Labrador Retriever delivering anything more severe than an extreme face-licking to any human – but certainly any breed that is trainable as a watchdog could also learn to hunt down and kill the neighbor kids.

So what breeds are they going to ban next when it turns out that the people who raised killer pitties before are now raising killer German Shepherds & Dobies, or miniature poodles that’ll gnaw your foot off?

It is possible with all breeds.

    exactly.

well, if i catch your rottweiler any where around my kids, its dead.

You won’t catch my dogs anywhere near your kids, i’m a responsible pet owner with a fenced yard and they never leave the house off leash. Even though if they did, they wouldn’t hurt a fly.

here’s my vicious dog around some kid.

  8. SayUncle Says:

And if you did, you’d be right to get rid of them (assuming you’re kid’s not on my land).

There is no such thing as a wolf hybrid. A wolfdog is just another crossbreed, like a peekapoo or a pit tzu, or my neighbor’s Mischka Mae, the german shepard – afghan cross. If they are uniquely illegal, how are they identified? Do they do genomic testing, check the fur for guard hairs (also found on some arctic spitzes), or just go by general appearance?

A poorly trained and socialized wolfdog can be dangerous, they never outgrow the drive to challenge authority, but for someone with the time and space they can be excellent, loving companions.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
