Wooing the South
Mike, in a read guaranteed to offend somebody, tells the Democrats that they can woo the South in the same way they’ve sewn up another demographic.

The Democrats HAD a lock on The South’s Presidential vote from Reconstruction up until around the end of WWII.

FDR started to get on the poor whites’ bad side when he condoned the suppression of the textile workers’ unions for the sake of the Southern Dem oligarchy’s support. Had it not been for Eleanor, we’d have been screwed over as usual, white and black both. I hate to say it, but she did help out a little, much as she gives me the creeps, generally.

There is merit to respecting Southern culture. However, the real challenge is to become the “regular guy” party again. They need to go back to Boss Tweed’s playbook and figure out how to become populist.
Democrats need new villains. The Nanny State is on life support, but it still inspires more shivers than any of the far more likely encroachments on our liberty being cooked up by the Bush wing of the GOP.
I’ll probably write on essay on this soon.
My pick for villain would be a version of the “Robber Baron” without the street-fighting panache (which many admire, including myself). These modern Robber Barons are pantywaisted corporate elites that are parasites on the shareholder and the taxpayer. I should know, I make my living off of them (guess that makes me a metaparasite).
“Panty-waisted corporate elite” probably has too many syllables though.
