Hidden Clause Would Force Lawmakers to Read Legislation
Update: Maybe we should try to get a law passed that requires Congress members to pass, with 70% proficiency, a test on what each law says or they can’t vote?

This is the kind of comment that occasionally earns me the label “cryptofascist” among my more traditional liberal friends, but I think every citizen should have to take and pass the citizenship test.
I’m certain there are plenty of members of congress who would fail miserably.
Hell, from what I’ve seen of the questions, I’m not even sure I would pass.
We take so much for granted.

A girl i worked with took the test to become a citizen and had a sample 100 questions that she passed around the office. It was basic stuff. I got 99 (she got 100 but had been studying) but was surprised that others in the office didn’t do well.

But they wouldn’t put those “little” last-minute changes on the test…
What we need is a requirement that:
1) The final vote on a bill cannot be taken until the entire bill, in it’s exact final form, has been read aloud in session.
2) No one can vote on that bill unless he or she was present and awake for the whole reading.
3) An absolute majority (218 congressmen and 51 senators) required for passage.
You think they’d figure out a way to get along without passing several thousand-page laws every week?
