Gratuitous Dog Pic
Yeah, I’ve posted it before but I just like this pic:
Also, Tom, forgoing buy a gun day, welcomes a new addition to his family.
And for the record, I think that dogs are more effective at deterring bad guys at the house than a gun.

I agree on the dog front. Nothing keeps people away like my big black dog (luckily they don’t know he’ll just lick em to death).
Congrats on the new arrival Tom.

Unless the burglars mace the dog, like they did to one of my parent’s friends last year.

Stormy:
A lot harder to mace two of ’em. π
Countertop:
Same problem with my dogs. They’ll kiss the burglar, say “hello,” and then hold the door open for them while they walk out with the stereo. π

Dogs are arguably more dangerous than guns in the home too, not being innanimate objects and all. The stats bear this out, as I posted a while back on my blog.

A dog is more likely to be home and more likely to wake up as the burglar enters. But it’s not nearly as dangerous as an armed homeowner.
OTOH, a loudly barking dog can sure distract the burglar while the owner is waking up, getting his gun out, and drawing a bead. A face-licking dog might be an even better distraction, provided it made enough noise to wake you up first…
I grew up on a farm with black Labradors. They are incurable face-lickers. If a burglar had ever shown up, I’m sure the dog would have barked loudly at first, and then put two paws on the intruder’s shoulders and proceeded to clean his face. Maybe he’d have had a heart attack before he realized the mutt was harmless. π

Great looking dog! Looks like my pit only the colors are exactly opposite. I must say in my home, to any burglar I should be the thing they fear most. I can assure you that my wife would be most dangerous, especially if someone maced “the baby”. As my wife was the only female in our CCW class, one of the attending old timers told her after shooting at the three ranges “I shore am glad you aint shootin at me”.
I know that our dog can hear a hummingbird break wind at 100 yards and respond immediately, and although she is very protective of the wife, dogs can be maced, shot, etc. The firearms in the home are what give me the feeling of extra comfort when I turn out the lights at night. As far a deterent though, 24/7 “Taz” guards the home with her life to any would be burglars. Best deterent= Dog, best defense=sidearm.

I seriously doubt mace would stop an attacking pit bull. Besides, it’s hard to spray the dog in the eyes when he has your nuts in a death grip.
