Feeling UnPATRIOTic
President Bush is pushing for the renewal of the PATRIOT Act. Whatever happened to the party of smaller government?

Vote Democrat and get big government for just $29.95
Vote Republican and get big government ABSOLUTELY FREE!

I am all for smaller government.
However…
After 9/11, the Bush administration was hammered hard with the question of whether or not they did enough to prevent it, and dealing with the aftermath.
Is the Bush administration now supposed to shrink the government, or expand it to better keep another 9/11 from happening? Seems to me that both missions are opposed to each other, yet most conservatives expect both to happen.

Gordon, the fact is report after report indicates they had the resources and warning, they just failed.

Gordon…how does the FBI being able to check my library records without getting a warrant first make us any safer?

I don’t have the answers to these questions, I’m just suggesting that the things the coservatives want from the government, reduced powers yet increased vigilance, are incompatible.
Don’t get mad at me, I want both, too. For the most part. I think we should just level a few enemy cities and say mission accomplished. It’s like we’re NEVER gonna get to use those missile silos in Nebraska.

I don’t think failure “just happens.” Part of the reason it failed is because of the pre-PATRIOT policy that required government agencies to keep each other in the dark. Getting rid of that “wall” was essential.
