I do not think it means what you think it means
The Feds have rounded up 582 alleged gang members:
Federal authorities arrested 582 alleged gang members over a two-week period, officials said Monday, targeting an estimated 80 violent groups they say have spawned street crimes across the country.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff called the gangs “a threat to our homeland security and … a very urgent law enforcement priority.”
Investigators picked up most of the offenders between July 16 and July 28 on immigration violations for being in the United States illegally. Seventy-six face criminal charges, ranging from illegal possession of a firearm to holding fraudulent documents.
Not bad, if you ask me. However, I wonder why this effort is headed by the Department of Homeland Security. Seems to me to be an immigration issue.

Department of homeland security now includes the immigration department and border partol. You are one organization chart behind. They put them in the same department. http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/display?theme=13

Oh, and I thought it was because INS wouldn’t use profiling to go after people. And the gangs around here all pretty much look the same. By that I mean six guys sauntering down the middle of the street all the same ethnic attributes, wearing the same headbands, jackets, pants, and sneakers. Usually all drinking the same 40oz type of beer.
Arresting all of them would be some form of profiling, I’m sure.
BTW, if you ever get stuck behind them, don’t honk – you’ll get an empty 40 in your windshield. It’s better to watch for them down the block and go around. Even if you are armed, the are better armed. Even if they can’t shoot for crap, they have fully auto….
Sorry, got a little off-topic there.

This is an attempt to make Homeland security look as if it is being pro active, when the fact is these gang members will be deported in a big dog and pony show, and then next week they will be back at the same place, drinking the same 40, but with an attitude. Bet they dont throw empty 40’s into windshields in Texas….
