As they say

If you’re old enough to die for your country, you should be able to buy a damn beer.

the higher minimum drinking age has led to the massive binge drinking problem on campus.

I love how you jump all over people who make even the tiniest error in fact or logic when you disagree with them, but never call your ideological buddies on ridiculously unsubstantiated claims like this.

My personal guess is that a huge chunk of the “binge” drinking “problem” can be explained by the fact that the definition of binge drinking is so low:

    http://www.edc.org/hec/pubs/factsheets/scope.html
“defined for men as five or more drinks in a row on at least one occasion in the past two weeks”

The problem is that “in a row” covers anything from slamming drinks one after another to slowly sipping beer off a keg over the course of an evening. Essentially, anything above the most mild level of intoxication has now been deemed binge drinking.

I’m certainly not saying there’s not a big problem with drinking on college campuses — there’s always been a big problem with drinking on college campuses. Buit I’m highly skeptical that it is worse today than it was 25 years ago.

I don’t disagree with your assessment of binge drinking. However, i don’t think my ‘ideological buddies’ consist of university professors. And by linking to something, it doesn’t mean I endorse every thing said (see rule 21). I don’t know that there is a correlation between binge drinking and minimum age. Even if there were, it doesn’t mean causation. The fact is, college kids drink because that’s what college kids do. At least, that’s what I and everyone I knew in college did.

I have not followed binge drinking stats and find them rather irrelevant, hence my reference to enlistment and being allowed to buy a beer. However, Balko has. I do find it odd that it is defined differently for men and women.

    Damn straight.

rasie the age to serve in the army or lower the age to drink beer.

I would perfer raise the age to serve in the army and vote, because it would match certian other areas closer (ie renting a gun (must be 21), renting a car (must be 25))

I think we need to lower the drinking age. Damn Puritans. 🙂

But how about this – if you have active Military ID, you can drink regardless of age.
That would resolve two issues at once, eh?

But I also think we should limit marriage to after 24.
Brainy people tell me the decision part of the brain doesn’t fully develop until early 20’s.
And marriage is something that requires good decision making.
And really, if you love someone, what’s a few years of waiting. If it’s gonna last 30 years, a few more years of engagement isn’t gonna hurt.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
