Excuse me?
Field and Stream lists the 1-15 of the 50 best guns ever made. There are no evil black rifles. They explain:
You’ll notice that there are no military or target arms here (with a few exceptions, for reasons explained). We decided to limit the list to hunting firearms, which is what F&S is about.

That’s because F&S is and never has been pro-Second Amendment –I remember trying to start a boycott over 10 years ago when editor David Petzal wrote there is no legitimate reason for civilians to own AK-47s.
F&S is a “Sportsmen for Kerry” or “American Hunting and Shooting Association” gun mag. There are much better magazines around for both the gun enthusiast and the liberty activist.

What a load of idiots. Wonder if they list the 30-06 Springfield or the 98K from whom most sporting bolt rifles take their design….if in fact they AREN”T some actual military sporterized rifle. We grew up deerhunting with a Springfield sporterized for dad and an Argentine 1891 sporterized for us boys, then added a 7mm Mauser sporterized. That’s it. No Remingtons, no 30-30s, no Winchesters. Lots of deer on the table via those rifles. In our deercamp in 1960-80 you would have found M1 Carbines, Enfield 303s, Mausers, et. A lever-action 30-30 was an exotic oddity.

“Wonder if they list the 30-06 Springfield or the 98K …”
I read though the whole list. He actually does include two “military” rifles: the M1903 Springfield and the 98K Mauser. On a number of other bolt action rifles he does mention the Mauser heritage.
He includes a few gas operated shotguns but not a single gas operated rifle. Go figure.
