Local gun scare that wasn’t
Police hurried to Heritage High School, which was then locked down for 20 or 30 minutes due to a gun scare. It was a fake gun used in ROTC drills.

This histeria is bordering on Hoplophobia (the irrational fear of inanimate objects/weapons)
In the seventies I went to an old high school in a suburb of Chicago, the original wings were built in the twenties. It had an indoor rifle range. JROTC, 4H, Boy Scouts, CAP and our local high school rifle teams all used the range. It was not uncommon for a team member to bring his cased (real) rifle to school on the bus just like a band member would bring their instruments. There was never a problem.
