More guns
Another report notes that post-Katrina gun sales are on the rise:
All the attention focused on home protection after hurricanes Katrina and Rita has increased sales of guns, earthquake insurance and home alarm systems locally.
People are looking for ways to protect themselves in the event of a disaster in the Victor Valley.
Lock Stock and Barrel manager Gabe Antravious said he attributes about 50 percent of their gun sales since Hurricane Katrina to customers worried about a disaster. A month and a half later, customers are still arming themselves.
“Most people buy one shotgun and a handgun,” Antravious said. “If someone breaks into the house, all most people need is to hear the cocking of a shotgun and they’re shaking out of there.”
I’d also recommend a good carbine.

A good lever action carbine in 44 or 30-30 is a nice bargain.

My father used to be a private gun dealer (meaning he had a license, but his stock was kept in the basement – he didn’t have a store).
When people would want to buy a handgun for home protection, he would first ask if they had children or lived in an apartment. If so, he would sell them a shotgun. (I know we’ve had raging discussions on this – including the perferred load-out of the shotgun, but I’m happy to re-ignite those flames. 🙂 )
He also recommended already having the gun cocked – Why give away your position? – was his attitude.
(He eventually gave up the business when the FedGov became to annoying and intrusive. He says Nixon’s “No Knock” law is still on the books and gets abused.)

The anecdotals are in and they say the same thing. Talking with my non-gunner friends this past month or so, several have been asking me questions about guns and showing interest in purchasing one – this from folks who face used to squeeze up like they’d licked a lemon when I’d mention the word “gun”. My years of conditioning them must have worked.

I’m not sure if this is fallout from Katrina/Rita and the consequent gun buying, but 7.62×39 has become tought to find, especially the inexpensive Russian-made stuff.
After looking all over the ‘net, I can’t find Wolf 7.62×39 FMJ anywhere.
Think folks are stockpiling?
