I’m not in NY
By my calculation, 97.23% of us are not New Yorkers. Yet, the transit strike there is the top news story everywhere I look.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.

But 97.23% of reporters, media gadflys, and other self important arbiters of what is important live there.

Aww c’mon S.U.
Couldn’t that same logic apply to any number of front page stories?
Most of us aren’t white women vacationing in Aruba either.
Seriously, it’s the same thing as the black-out.
Big city, big event = big news.
More than 97.23% might be concerned about the issues underlying the strike – unions vs. municipalities (both are behaving like assholes IMO). Also, for those poor clueless folks who think Pataki has a chance as a presidential candidate, they may be looking for bold moves that show what kind of leader he would make. Will he de-certify the TWU like Reagan did for the air traffic controllers?
I’m sure we’re all waiting with bated breath.
OK, you win.
Must be a slow news day.
What’s your top story?

The strike has been the top story for me in the last 5 days. I have a bicycle, but it’s still not easy. The strike is big news because NY is the center of the world. So much of the world does business with NY that when we shut down, it ripples out everywhere.
Case in point: It took me several hours to somebody at work to set up a conference call for me. I missed the call and it’s been pushed back to tomorrow. One guy on the call is in Australia. The strike is even effecting them.
On the plus side: I’m working from home.
On the down side: I just drank my last drop of bourbon.

I’m not saying it’s not news. It is. However, it’s news that is worthy of a blurb not wall-to-wall coverage. As for my top story, the ID ruling is pretty big. Or the fact the US just lost the drug war due to the election in Bolivia. Or whether or not the NSA violated the law.
That’s just off the top of my head, though.

NSA top story without a doubt.
I’m going with the explanation that there was some sort of “wide net” algorithm looking for patterns in traffic. I can see the potential value of intelligence gathered from the general public, however, I’m ideologically opposed. I’ll take the risk of being blown up over having all of my telecom traffic potentially surveilled.
Then again, we’ll probably have mandatory implants of id chips into our newborns within the decade, so I’m probably behind the curve.

I’m so glad I no longer have to live there (though I will be back next week for NYE)

There is a lot of news that should be covered, but isn’t. Though I am nowhere near NYC, I do think this is important news, though I doubt it will be covered the way it should be. The abuse of this unions efforts to extort from the city and state of NY proves that all unions are really nothing more than grifters. I wanna hear what the pro-union dems have to say about this.
Once they open their mouths that is when it becomes major national news.
