Google v. Gov
The Bush administration asked Google to turn over internet search data in an effort to revive a law that has been struck down in court. Google has told them to get stuffed. Good for them:
Nicole Wong, Google’s associate general counsel, countered: “Google is not a party to this lawsuit, and the demand for the information is overreaching.”

note MSN, AOL, Yahoo all gave up the data without a peep (Yahoo also gave up a Chinese journalist last year).
Some guidance on searches from Wired:

One reason I use Google. The dangers of data mining are many.

Wong’s comment is a non sequitur. Since when does being (or not being) a party to a suit have a f’n thing to do with whether or not you have to honor a subpoena? I am almost afraid to ask what law school she must have flunked out of, but here goes… Oh crap. I knew I shouldn’t have looked.
Also, lest anyone mistake Google’s petulance for a principled stand against overreaching government, be sure to check this out.
