Where the cheap 7.62 went

The guys at The Gun Zone blame Olympic Arms for the import restriction on milsurp steel core ammo which caused the prices to sore in the mid-90s. But what’s up with it lately? Last time I bought a case, it was $99. Now, it’s going for $150.

Rumor going ’round the gun boards (TFL, THR) is that the Russian factories (Wolf, Barnaul, etc) are tied up servicing massive orders for the Iraqi government, and possibly also Venezuela.

Higher fuel costs don’t help, either. Ammo’s heavy.

And yeah, at the funshow last weekend, all the Wolf was $149/1000. Did pick up 400 rounds of the increasingly rare Cheetah for $80.

The price of gilding metal has doubled recently. Gilding metal is used on jacketed bullets and as gas checks on lead bullets. I am told that China is buying up stocks of gilding metal, causing a price spike on the international markets.

The counter-commando at one of the local gun stores here was telling me there is no 7.62 to be had for the most part and when there is it’s more expensive because supposedly Argentinia has issued AK47s to all able bodied citizens, and of course the war in the gulf eats up a lot of russian ammo, and I hear 7.62×39 is the round of choice for the illegal immigrant/drug smugglers coming up from mexico.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
