Canadian gun registry
Could be the end of that boondoggle:
The new Conservative government has the federal long gun registry in its crosshairs, which has prompted some defenders of the program to plead with the Tories not to pull the trigger on the much-maligned registry.
But the cries of clemency coming from crime victims and now police chiefs, as compelling as they may be, must not be heeded and the registry must be put out of its misery.

This is the Conservatives’ acid test: If they can’t get rid of the gun registry, then real change is simply not possible in Canada.
You can see how entrenched gun control is in Canada in that line from the editorial: The recognition of the “compelling” cries of crime victims, as if the registry actually prevented a single crime. This is from an editorial that’s supposedly anti-registry.
I’m not optimistic.

The sad truth is that with a minority government the Tories may not be able to tear down the registry at this stage in the game. They will undoubtedly be able to whittle away at it, but both the Liberals and the NDP are anti-gun, and the BQ surely recognizes that Quebec has significant support for the registry (60% supported keeping it to 40% some odd for scrapping it). If the BQ hedges then the Tories won’t have enough support to stomp the registry into non-existence.
We may have to wait for a conservative majority before the registry gets its long overdue reward.
