According to everyone, I was wrong in this post. Modern portable phones apparently are cellular.

“cellular” technology is a definition of an infrastructure, not of a specific technology. It just means that you are broadcasting to a nearby repeater/amplifier to be transmited to another repeater/amplifier to be transmitted to the reciever.
It’s like mail. When you write a letter, the letter first goes to a mailbox, then to a post office, from the post office, to another post office, then to a mail box.
The post offices are the cell towers. Technicaly even satellite phones are cellular.
