Gun use caught on tape
Guy at arfcom posted a video of a friend of his who used his gun to stop a robbery. The video is here. Guy says three shots fired and three shots hit the robber. Also, no charges filed against the guy who shot the robber. A few notes:
That happened way fast.
That was one hella draw, obviously this dude practices.
Point of aim and muzzle were awful damn close to the kid, who probably suffered some hearing damage.
The robber was shot while fleeing and that could have been bad for the guy who shot him. But it likely happened way too fast to consider that.
Not sure it’s a great idea to add a soundtrack and post it on Al Gore’s Internets.
And the pic at the end reinforces this notion that some gun nut is happy he shot someone.
Take it all with huge grains of salt because hindsight is always 20/20.
Update: Wesley, in comments, tells us that on page 7 of that thread, the shooter comments. He says the camera angle makes it look like the kid was in danger but actually was not.

I don’t know if you noticed but the shooter posted a message about the incident on the 7th page of the forum post. Interesting read and good video.

Yeah, hearing damage for the munchkin sucks. And he was a little too close to her for comfort for me. No amount of money, nor stopping a robbery, is worth hearing damage. None.

But slightly diminished hearing is a small price to pay for saving a life. Without the clerks action it’s likely that the bad guy would continue his evil actions but now, from the reports, it seems that Mr. evildoer is on a seven year hiatus during which he’ll not harm the innocent. Keep in mind that the lives the clerk may have saved might not have been in that room. In the end it’s our duty to resist evil.

I really liked this post, less than 24 hours after the video was put up.
Jumping to conclusions and not realizing that not everyone is standing by 24/7 to respond to your postings on an internet gun board.
That, more than anything, is probably the reason I don’t visit them very much any more.

“But slightly diminished hearing is a small price to pay for saving a life.”
I’m usually much nicer than this, but FUCK THAT. If that was all they were risking, no problem, but have you got or heard of TINNITUS? SHEAR FUCKING TORTURE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! People kill themselves because of it. That ass crack would get a stiff punch in the face, along with the thank you for stopping the BG, if that was my daughter.

Tinnitis isn’t the worst thing that can happen to a young girl. I’ve gotten used to it over the years (21 years on the flight deck within feet of turning jet engines will do that to you); although it frustrates my wife to no end when I can’t understand what she’s trying to say to me…Oh, and I can’t hear my watch alarm. I’ve accidentally set it once or twice and then didn’t realize it was beeping until someone told me. Once it was in Church…That was embarrasing.
My big concern is that I’ll ever have to use my gun for defensive purposes without the benefit of hearing protection. I’m afraid I’ll lose my hearing completely. That would really suck.
I’m looking into electronic ear plugs that I can wear all the time whenever I’m carrying. Expensive to be sure, but my hearing is worth the expense and inconvenience.
As far as the video. It’s easy to sit back and armchair quarterback what the guy should and shouldn’t have done. He probably shouldn’t have shot the goblin in the back while running away and perhaps he shouldn’t have shot that close to the kid, but he was in a situation that required him to act NOW; it is a bit forgivable if he didn’t adequately weigh the ramifications of each and every action before taking them. He obviously knew what he was doing with the gun and knew he could end the situation without accidentally shooting any of the innocents, he reacted in a split second and scratched one goblin. Good on him. Had he decided not to shoot because of the proximity of the little girl, and then the girl had been abducted, hurt or killed by the goblin, how many people would have been condemning the guy for NOT acting?
If that were my daughter and grandaughter in the video, I’d be patting the guy on the back and doing what I could to help said daughter and granddaughter deal with their hearing loss, not crying foul. Life isn’t always fair. Deal with it.

Yeah, I’ve seen ones that sell in the $2500 range that look pretty nice. Maybe in five years I’ll pick up a pair 🙂
On the other hand, tinnitus affects different people, well, differently. I’ve had it for 12 years and I was used to it. Then, for no apparent reason it got way worse, just in the last year. It has driven me bananas. Now it seems to have settled down and it comes and goes (at best it almost goes back to the way it was, but never goes away entirely).
I think what we need is an implanted device that protects the internal stuff in the ear. Bionic man/woman sorta stuff. I’d buy that in a jiffy. The six million dollar price tag is a bit steep though.
Yeah, I’d pat him on the back and punch him in the mouth at the same time, just to remind him that life isn’t always fair, and that maybe he ought to add “considering ramifications” to his training, so that he doesn’t just react with the gun, but maybe has played out generic scenarios in his head, not just from the gunplay angle.

Don’t know that I would recommend the $70 pair, You get what you pay for.

thanks for the link. $500 for 32 dB reduction looks pretty good. Maybe next year 🙂
For now, I just wander around in the wood with muffs on top of my head, ready to pull down. :p
