Wow
The guys at Subguns.com report that someone at the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot stole a transferable M-60. The thief was later caught. Price of a pre-86, transferable M-60 machine gun: About $30,000.

Kind of a stupid thief I guess. The value of the M60 is in the registration. As soon as it gets stolen, it becomes an illegal machine gun, and the value would drop substantially. I don’t think the thief could have ever unloaded it for anywhere near the price it’s worth.
Kind of points out how silly the law is though, when the black market price for a machine gun would be far less than in the legal market. I can’t imagine what a criminal would do with an M60 anyway.

What idiot would steal from a guy that owns automatic belt-fed weaponry?

Uh, a suicidal one?

Considering the ATF-admitted sorry-assed state of the NFA registry, I would be shocked if there weren’t MORE Pre-86 M60s in circulation now than in 1986.

One question posted was how could a gun like this get stolen. Hey, in the ’60s – while in college – I worked for a Wal-Mart-like store in NJ. Someone stole a 9″ rotary table saw – unbolted it from the diplay table and walked away. But the best one was the two guys who stole a canoe – on their shoulders and out the door. We found that if you wore the “dust-buster” jacket most of the staff wore, and carried a clipboard, you could go anywhere and take anything!
