These old things
I have to confess that I’ve never had much use nor a desire to get into surplus rifles. But Tam does and she tells us why. They are indeed historical and neat but I’m just an Evil Black Rifle guy at heart.

My point wasn’t that they are historical or neat, but that they are A) Cheap shoot and modify, and B) Actual military issue weapons. These are things that no XM15-E2S or WASR-10 will ever be. Thus, the milsurp is the perfect “gateway gun” for both the future gun hobbyist and the future RKBA activist.
Every kid that buys a Mosin or Mauser is a future voter that will help you keep your RRA and Vepr. 🙂

Er, that should read “A) Cheap to buy, shoot, and modify…”
Pesky keyboard, always moving keys when I’m not looking. 🙁

And they’re fun. With the recoil it’s dangerous to be on both sides, you get a feeling of what it was like to lug that monster over the hills and far away, you can shoot them for the same cost of your .22, they are cheap to buy, old as dirt, built to last, and still working like the day they came out of the (converted) tractor factory.
And if you’re not an annoying purist (as I am not) you can strip them down and trick them up with the best of them. It’s fun to have an SKS in your hands and a Makarov on your hip.
Then again, they’re delivering my 24″ bead-blasted stainless EBR barrel tomorrow (hopefully) for my new build….the grandpa’s will have to sit in the safe for a bit until I’m done playing with the new one.

Besides, my Mosin Nagant 91/30 with the 2′ spike bayonet is one helluva war club. Try THAT with a plastic fantastic EBR!

…and an M44 makes a perfect semi-disposable trunk gun. It’s small and handy, rugged, and most of all: Rifle + 440 rounds of ammo =

er, “equals less than $150.”
Dang html not letting me use the “less than” sign!
