Clarification
I think you’re mistaken on that point, Mr. Uncle. A search at GunBroker just netted me 61 auctions selling armor piercing ammo in .223, .308, 30-06, 7.62×54R, and .50BMG.
AP ammo is only illegal for handgun ammunition.
I should have been more clear. Armor piercing ammo, as a legal construct, is different from what is actually armor piercing. Justin is correct that AP ammo for handguns is illegal but that means rounds designed to penetrate vests, whereas real AP ammo is designed to penetrate armor such as that on a vehicles. Most rifle rounds penetrate vests anyway since vests are designed to stop handgun ammo.
Sorry for the confusion.

Wait a minute. I saw with my own eyes, in the movie “Lethal Weapon” (or was it Lethal Weapon II? Who cares? Same movie) Danny Glover shoot several holes through a large bulldozer blade, with a standard service pistol, killing the driver. Scary, scary things, those cop killer bullets.
Naturally, our legislators saw the movie and took appropriate action, ’cause as everyone knows from experience, if you make something illegal, criminals wont do it, and the problem is therefore solved with the stroke of a pen.

Actually, that wasn’t a standard service pistol. “It was a machine pistol with twin carbines and all the bells and whistles!” Direct quote from the same movie. Tell me how much sense that makes.
Ignorance abounds, and it’s difficult to stamp out.

I believe it was Mel Gibson who shot out the bulldozer in Lethal Weapon III.
In a deleted scene, it was revealed that the NRA was the one supplying the bad guys with machine guns and AP ammo.
