It’s a different world
Japan is re-thinking it’s passivity:
Shinzo Abe, the front-runner to become Japan’s next prime minister, has called for revisions to the pacifist constitution imposed after World War II, saying the country must adapt to a new era.
It’s a new world but I’m fairly certain Japan has agreed to stay that way in exchange for us not nuking them.

IIRC it was Japan that decided that their imposed constitution required military passivity.

As of 2005 Japan has a negative population growth. Their population is declining. Seems the Japanese have already voted about their future. They’ve chosen a future without any Japanese. They better hurry on the getting tough stuff before there is nobody left to turn out the lights.

We’ve got around 50,000 troops there. I’m all for Japan shouldering some of that load and America reducing its presence. We can’t be everywhere in full strength at once.

Kidding aside, though, I wouldn’t mind a militarily strong Japan, given their westernization and their proximity to China and N. Korea…
