Seriously?
BB Guns are illegal in Chicago:
Making good on warnings that BB-guns are illegal in Chicago, police have busted a Northwest Side store owner for selling one of the plastic weapons to a 13-year-old boy, authorities said Monday.
Plastic? Are they AirSoft? Banning BB guns is stupid and banning AirSoft is likely more so.

It’s not unusual. There are age limitations for the ownership of BB and Airsoft guns in many states. I know in Ohio, most retailers won’t sell rifles to those under 16, and pistols to those under 18, although this may be store policy rather than state law.
Usually, the ‘reasoning’, if you can call it that, is that the ‘guns’ can be confused with real weapons, that they encourage violent acts (like a Mr. Potato encourages you to rip off limbs), and can be modified to potentially break skin!

If I remember correctly, air-powered guns are only exempt from being classified as firearms in Illinois if they are smaller than .18″ and have a muzzle velocity of under something or other, maybe 500fps? So, airsoft, being a 6mm (.243″ diameter) is a firearm, and requires a FOID to posses. (And, perhaps, subject to the same transport, discharge, and carrying laws)
But, I don’t live in Chicago or IL, so, take this with a grain of salt. (or two)
