Republicans Cutting and Running

WSJ reports that Republicans don’t really want to win in November. The Republicans are bleeding from the right because they’ve abandoned even the pretense of fiscal conservatism. They’re bleeding from the left as moderates peel off because of the Iraq debacle. And Libertarians have finally woken up to the fact that Bush has never opposed a single proposal to expand federal power.

Finally, even folks that like Republicans want to lose. They want some Democrats around so they have somebody to blame their failures on.

Other Republicans couch their desire for Republican losses in political terms, arguing that Democratic control of Congress for at least two years would increase the chances of Republicans retaining the presidency in 2008, by giving Republican candidates high-profile Democratic targets.

It’s nice to see the Republicans pay a political price for being a bunch of feckless weasels. It’s too bad the only real alternative is the Democrats.

    Democrats aren’t also feckless weasels?

I thought “feckless weasel” was a prerequisite for running for public office, regardless of party affiliation.

As much as I like to argue with BH, I can’t this time: The Republicans brought this on themselves.

Had they kept spending under control and done something tangible about immigration it wouldn’t even be close right now. I predict they’ll hold both houses of Congress — but just barely.

  3. Rustmeister Says:

    Same here.

How about some more ‘splodey pics, BH? =)

  4. JustinB Says:

I hope they get their ass kicked and we get 8 years of Democratic rule in the exec office/house and senate. I also hope…just for spite….that they try to bring back the assault weapons ban and even more nanny laws simply to punish some of the dumbasses who blindly pull the lever each November just because they have an R beside their name.

  5. Brutal Hugger Says:

Splosions are on hold due to the splody crew lacking time. We started working on a new way to make things travel very fast in many different directions at once. It’s sitting in pieces in my apartment while I figure out how to wire it up. I have the feeling it’s going to wait until the spring. Don’t you hate it when being a responsible adult prevents you from doing incredibly stupid and immature things?

    Never been afflicted by that.

    Justin B,

You can be sure the Nazi-Commie Democratic leadership will bring back the so-called “assault weapons” (actually semi-auto) weapons ban. And Geoerge W. Bush will sign it–since he supports that citizen disarmament. I plan to vote independent in the U.S. Senate race instead of “wasting my vote” on establishment candidates, Ford and Corker. I may vote to re-elect my Democratic Congressman Bart Gordon, since he opposed the “assault weapons” ban, voted against Bush’s CFR CAFTA and has markedly improwed his voting record on illegal immigration. I will vote for a conservative Republican for State Rep to hopefully help oust House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh who has especially stopped pro armed self-defense and measures against illegal immigration with his iron-fisted control of House committees.

That’s not an alternative, that’s just the other chapter of the Beltway Political Lifers Club.

  9. Ed Buckby Says:

I’m not up for any new gun laws, but, as comical as it sounds, wasn’t the assault weapons ban a . . . “good thing” for gun enthusiasts? Think about it. The ban directly or indirectly brought about:

A rebirth for the .45 ACP
    Cowboy action shooting
    The 40 S&W and 357 Sig rounds
A bounce in the interest in 10mm
Inexpensive but quality American clones of European “assault weapons”
New models are REALLY small but quality large caliber handguns (concealed weapons)

As funny as it sounds, I’m betting that without the AWB, the 9mm would still be the “weapon of choice”, and we’d all still be having the “30 rounds v.s. 8 rounds” battle.

    Just a thought . . .

  10. Ron W Says:

    Unintended consequences, huh, Ed.

Of course, part of the so-called “assault weapons” ban is to limit the peasants and serfs (us) to 10 rds (to start with), because, as they say, we don’t need more to hunt. But why does that legislation exempt government officials and agents…what are they gonna be hunting with their real assault (FULL-AUTO) weapons?..or should I say who?

The RKBA is NOT about hunting, but about security from criminals and tyrants:

“The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie
the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not
become the legalized version of the first.”–Thomas Jefferson

  11. Ed Buckby Says:

As bad as it sounds, I’m not really worried about the government taking our guns. They don’t have the manpower with the resources or drive to do it. I’m more worried about the government trying to “annoy” people into not owning guns or having target shooting or hunting as a hobby.

It’s funny the things that came out of the “ban”, though. I blab on more here if you get really bored: They call me Ed . . .

  12. Ron W Says:

    Ed,

    I disagree.

A few months ago, some man locally was arrested for making and having some explosive device and they reported that he had firearms (as though that was a crime). BATFE agents were shown swarming everywhere. The gov’t concentrates on citizens with guns whereas they SAY they don’t have the manpower to apprehend illegal alens arrested by local law enforcement. They have the manpower with their militarized police that operate in multi-jurisdictional mode with the Dept of Homeland Security.

  13. Ed Buckby Says:

Well, to be honest, it probably wasn’t the “he has guns” thing that got that BATFE excited. It was probably that whole “he’s guns AND EXPLOSIVES” thing. I don’t think guns excites the police nearly as much as explosives, you know? And MAKING explosives is probably even worse. It’s like the difference between naked and nekkid i.e. naked is “ain’t got no clothes on” and nekkid is “ain’t got no clothes on AND UP TO SOMETHING!”. 🙂

Someone who’s got unauthorized explosives and/or is making explosives AND TELLING PEOPLE probably DOES need a visit from the authorities, honestly.

I think the government eyeballs people who have guns AND SEEM TO BE UP TO SOMETHING. There are quite a number of us at work who target shoot quite a bit, and the police rarely give us a second look. Then again, we don’t wear cammo everywhere and have signs in our yards that say “tresspassers including pigs and the ATF will be shot”, either.

Well Ed, I see you too were a Lewis Grizzard fan.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
