First police force to get 45GAP?
I’d heard rumors that the 45GAP would become a police cartridge pretty quickly. It is in NY now:
New York State Police Superintendent Wayne Bennett announced today that the New York State Police has purchased 5,400 new Glock pistols to replace older Glock models that were called into question following the death of Trooper Andrew J. Sperr on March 1 in Chemung County.
The state police have purchased the new model Glock 37 which is a .45 G.A.P. caliber after what Bennett called careful consideration by a special committee.
Side note: I did read up on Sperr (cliff notes here). Not sure that a different weapon would have made much difference.

Is there any size difference in the Glocks chambered in .45GAP compared to .45ACP? —Just looked it up… about a tenth of an inch thinner grip, about 3 tenths smaller grip circumference. Pi was unavailable for comment 🙂 —Eh, I guess I must be a luddite, but the .45GAP seems to be either a tiiiiny improvement not worth changing chamberings over, or a niche chambering for when you really, really want a .45, but you also want a gun with a frame that’s just a tiiiny bit too small for a full sized ACP. But I don’t think .05″ is all that important. If you want the smaller frame, just go for a .40S&W or even a 9mm. I guess if someone else is going to be buying your ammo for you, then the extra price for a tenth of an inch is worth it. And Glock probably gave them a heck of a deal on the guns anyway. (Good business strategy for them, and it’s worked before.)
Just don’t mess with my ACP. 🙂

“after what Bennett called careful consideration by a special committee.”
AKA the bribegiving.

Oliver Springs, TN uses the Glock 37, too.
Ask me how I know. 🙂

the .45 GAP is a solution to a non-existant problem. If they really needed physically smaller, the .40 would have been the better choice. It is more powerful than the 9mm and smaller than the .45ACP and is available from more manufacturers with concomitant competition.
I think Dr. Strangegun may have hit the bullseye.

the 45GAP cartridge seems like a half-assed solution for putting 45ACP power into someones smaller hands. I agree with the folks who’d recommend 40 sw over the 45GAP or just “man up” and get a full bore 45. BTW: Springfield Armory makes a nice 45GAP shooter but their XD in 45ACP is better.
