Regrets

Yeah, I feel that too. I started feeling them earlier than most.

Dude, this GOLDEN nugget is in the comments over there:

“The real danger with Clinton is not so much that she’s so far-left; it’s that a Clinton administration would become populated with like-minded far-lefties, and the federal hiring process would shift even more to rewarding big government socialist authoritarians. Four years of Hillary would produce a group of leftie gummint employees, firmly entrenched in the bureaucracy for three decades, who would influence regulations, procedures and legislation throughout the rest of our lives, and much of our children’s.”

    wow!

It’s a pity that our one big hope of getting it right (OBHOGIR) might be the sudden and violent arrival of the end of cheap oil, with the return of donkeys for transport and a total collapse of central control.

At that point, the power will be local, and in the hands of those with the firearms…

  3. _Jon Says:

Sorry Dave, but there is no way we will return to donkeys.

The progression (if we lose “cheap” oil) will be to to “less cheap” oil, which will bring currently “out of reach” technology into play.

For example, when gas was $1 / gal, Ethanol (at $1.50 / gal) was out of reach. Now? Not so much.
Another example; when oil as $25 / bbl, shale-oil (at $40 / bbl) was not economical. Now? Looking appealing.

Peak oil (which is what you were alluding to, sir) is bunk.

  4. Dave thA Says:

Ethanol is made at a relatively low price by using cheap oil – the fertilizer to make the mono-crop is made from hydrocarbon fuel – the seed is sown by a machine made using oil, powered by oil, then transported by oil, refined by oil, distributed by oil in machines made by oil.

Shale oil, its collection, refining and distribution again relies upon a cheap oil infrastructure.

“Less cheap” oil is expensive oil. Expensive oil means everything else is more expensive, leaving even less money for transport.

Admittedly, we have a long way to go before we have to use donkeys, but for many people, the return to lower tech is not too far off.

Peak oil would appear to be a logical fact.

The only question is to when.

(Though I do hate the whole concept as being less than optimistic, as it goes directy against my nature.)

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
